Hungarian Opposition Poised For Landslide

Hungary's center-right Civic Union (Fidesz) won a landslide victory in first-round Parliamentary elections on Sunday. According to some polls, the party is likely to win two-thirds of all seats in parliament. With 99 percent of votes counted, Fidesz received 52.77 percent of the national vote. The ruling Socialists, hurt by unpopular deficit-reducing measures, earned just 19.29 percent. The rightwing Jobbik party, known for its anti-Semitic and anti-Gypsy rhetoric, will enter Parliament for the first time with a showing of 16.71 percent. Turnout for the first round was 64.29 percent. The second round of voting, which will determine who wins a remaining 121 seats, will take place on April 25.

Center-left government retains power after 2006 election

On April 24, Hungary announced preliminary results for the second round of general elections that were held on April 23. With 98.38% of the votes counted, current Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany's Social Party (MSZP) and the Free Democrats (SZDSZ) increased their representation to 210 seats in the 386-member parliament. The conservative Fidesz obtained 164 seats while the Hungarian Democratic Forum gained 11 seats. This is the first time since the fall of communism in Hungary that a governing party has been reelected. The new National Assembly will convene within the next 30 days to form the new government.

Hungary announces results of first round parliamentary elections

On April 11 the Hungarian government announced the results of the first round of parliamentary elections, at the end of which 212 of the 386 seats in the National Assembly have been decided. The Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) currently leads with 105 seats and is followed by Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Union with 97. The Alliance of Free Democrats (SZDSZ) is third with 4 seats, while the conservative Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF) barely passed the 5% threshold needed to qualify for parliament and won 2 seats. The second round of elections will be held on April 23.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy announced on October 11th that a referendum will be held on March 15, 2003.  The referendum will be to determine Hungary’s membership into the European Union, based on an EU report that listed the country among 10 other countries eligible for membership in 2004.

Hungary Announces First Round Results of Parliamentary Elections

The first round of voting on April 7, 2002 resulted in the Socialist Party narrowly ahead of the ruling Fidesz party. The Socialists received 41.2% of the vote, Fidesz won 40.3%, and the Alliance of Free Democrats came in third place with 6.17% of the votes. The decisive second-round will be held April 21, 2002.
