Yahaya JAMMEH reelected for third term in office

Posted: 09/24/2006
Official results released by the Independent Electoral Commission on September 24 declared President Yahaya JAMMEH the winner of the September 22 election. JAMMEH received 67% of the votes, while opposition leader Ousainou DARBOE (UDP/NRP) came in second with 26.69% of votes. Both were followed by Halifa SALLAH (NADD) with 5.98%. Turnout was 58.58% with more than 390,000 people casting votes. DARBOE refused to accept the results claiming election fraud and voter intimidation by the government. To vote in presidential elections, Gambians use a unique marble system which was introduced more than 40 years ago to address the high illiteracy problem in the country. Instead of a ballot paper, each voter receives a colorless glass marble that s/he must drop in the drum (ballot box) for the candidate of choice. While descending, the marble hits a bell that alerts the presiding officer that the vote was cast.
