Congolese President Wins Re-Election

President Denis SASSOU-NGUESSO won re-election with 78 percent of votes on Sunday. While international observers called the vote free and fair, opposition politicians boycotted the polls, one civil society group alleged fraud, and there were reports of vote-buying. According to the government, turnout was 66 percent, but some groups argue almost 90 percent of eligible voters stayed home.

Ruling party gets majority in parliament.

Results released by Territorial Administration Minister, Francois Ibovi after the first round of National Assembly elections give the ruling Congolese Labour Party (PCT) a number of 35 seats of the 44 decided. The main opposition party, Pan-African Union for Social Democracy, only managed to secure 2 seats. Many opposition parties have criticized the elections as not being free and fair and have boycotted them. The remainder of the 137 seats will be decided in the second round on July 22.

Parliament elections slated to 24 June and 22 July 2007

The government announced on February 14 that elections to the country's next National Assembly will be held in two rounds on June 24 and July 22, 2007. In response to demands from opposition parties, the government also pledged to establish an independent electoral commission to oversee the management of the election.
