ANC Approaches Two-thirds Parliamentary Majority

Posted: 04/24/2009
Despite what observers called its hardest contest yet, the African National Congress was close to retaining its two-thirds parliamentary majority as counting neared an end Friday for the April 22 parliamentary elections. With nearly 67 percent of votes, the ANC is well positioned to elect Jacob ZUMA the next President of South Africa. ZUMA took over leadership of the ANC from President Thabo MBEKI in December 2007, causing Deputy President Kgalema MOTLANTHE to become chief executive until Wednesday's election. The opposition Democratic Alliance, which includes many non-black South Africans, is poised to wrest control of the Western Cape provincial legislature. The DA is likely runner up in national parliamentary elections with about 16 percent of votes.

South African Parliamentary Poll Set for April 22

Posted: 02/10/2009
South African president Kgalema MOTLANTHE announced this year's anticipated parliamentary elections will be held on April 22. The ruling African National Congress (ANC), which has held political power in the country since the end of Apartheid government in 1994 is expected to win the vote. South African presidents are elected by parliament; therefore, if the ANC wins a majority of seats in April, it will elect its leader Jacob ZUMA president. But for the ANC, which won almost 70 percent of the vote in the last elections, an easy victory may not be so likely. Though he denies any wrongdoing, ZUMA has been indicted for fraud, corruption, racketeering, money laundering, and tax evasion, for which he will stand trial in August. Additionally, the ANC is deeply divided internally between factions loyal to ZUMA and others loyal to his rival, former President Thabo MBEKI, who ZUMA forced to resign last year after assuming leadership of the party. Following MBEKI's forced resignation last year, several pro-MBEKI dissidents abandoned the ANC to form a new political party, the Congress of the People (COPE), which analysts predict will be the first opposition party to present a credible threat to the ANC's 14-year political hegemony.

New Political Party in South Africa to Challenge ANC in 2009 Elections

Posted: 12/17/2008
Mosiuoa LEKOTA, a former defense minister and close ally of recently ousted South African president Thabo MBEKI, was named as president of the newly established Congress of the People (COPE) on Tuesday. Dissidents from South Africa's African National Congress (ANC), which has ruled the country since the end of the racist apartheid government 14 years ago, broke away from the ANC earlier this year after a rival faction took control of the party and forced the country's president Thabo MBEKI to resign. MBEKI's forced resignation and the new party's formation reflected deep divisions within the ANC, which has enjoyed a near monopoly on power since apartheid's end in 1994 by winning healthy majorities in every election since the transition. COPE will likely become the first party to present a credible threat to the ANC's 14-year hegemony. The party previously scored well in recent municipal by-elections and, last Friday, defeated the ANC's legal challenge to keep it from using the word "Congress" in its name. COPE and the ANC will face off against one another in general elections scheduled for March of 2009.

South Africa President Resigns, Caretaker President Named

Posted: 09/23/2008
Embattled South African President Thabo MBEKI announced his resignation on Sunday, clearing the way for the country's Parliament to choose a caretaker president to serve out the remaining seven months of MBEKI's term. MBEKI's party, the African National Congress (ANC), whose members hold more than two thirds of the seats in Parliament, announced the following day that it would nominate its deputy president, Kgalema MOTLANTHE, for the post. MBEKI's downfall began last year when the ANC elected his rival, the controversial but charismatic Jacob ZUMA, as party president. In the following months ZUMA's supporters replaced party officials loyal to MBEKI, leaving the president isolated in his own party. Eleven of MBEKI's cabinet ministers have announced their resignations following MBEKI's announcement. MOTLANTHE only recently won his seat in Parliament this May, though he has a long history as a trade unionist and ANC official, during which he has maintained a low profile. Analysts opine that MOTLANTHE was selected because, while widely respected inside the party, his low profile and lack of a public support base means that he would be unable to challenge ZUMA for the party's nomination for next year's presidential election.
