Ruling party wins victory in 2006 elections

Posted: 05/08/2006
The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) swept another landslide victory in the May 6 elections when it secured 82 of the 84 seats contested in the Parliament. The opposition retained the two seats won in the 2001 election and obtained a third one based on an allocation rule for non-constituency seats to parties not represented in the government. For the first time since 1988, opposition parties managed to field candidates in more than half of the country's 23 constituencies. The ruling PAP party has won all 10 elections that have been held since the country obtained independence in 1965.

The ruling People's Action Party (PAP), in power since Singapore gained independence from Malaysia in 1965, currently holds 82 out of 84 parliamentary seats.
