Armenia Presidential 2013

Armenians voted in the country’s presidential election, held on February 18, 2013. Incumbent president Serzh SARGASYAN (Republican Party of Armenia, HHK) won the presidency with a majority of 59 percent.� Armenia’s first Foreign Minister Raffi K. HOVHANNISYAN received only 37 percent of the vote, followed by former Prime Minister Hrant BAGRATIAN with 2.15 percent. HOVHANNISYAN, also leader of major opposition group the Heritage Party, rejected the election results citing electoral fraud and requesting SARGASYAN to meet him to personally discuss the situation. This sparked a wave of public demonstrations in protest of the election results. �Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has reported voter turnout of 60 percent (1, 521,931 valid votes out of 2,529,016 eligible voters).

Armenia holds parliamentary poll

The Republican Party of Armenia, led by President Serzh SARKSYAN, won a majority of seats in parliamentary elections on Sunday. The Republican Party captured 69 seats in the 131-seat parliament while Gagik TSARUKYAN's Prosperous Armenia party finished in second place with about 36 seats.

Presidential Elections in Armenia

Protesters lined the streets in Armenia’s capital on Wednesday after preliminary presidential results were announced by the Central Election Committee in favor of Prime Minister Serzh SARKSYAN with 52.9% of the vote. His majority defeated opposition candidate Levon TER-PETROSYAN with 21.5% and avoided a runoff. TER-PETROSYAN has refused to recognize the election result and alleged Tuesday’s vote to be marred by ballot stuffing and intimidation at the polls. International observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe announced in a preliminary statement that they had concerns about the vote count but later issued a generally positive assessment.

Armenia Announces Preliminary Results of Parliamentary Elections

On May 25, Armenians elected new members for the country's 131 seat Parliament. According to preliminary results by the Central Election Commission (CEC), about 50.45% of the country’s 2.3 million voters participated in the polls. Early projections show that Prime Minister Adranik MARKARYAN’s Republican Party secured 23 seats, while the Justice Alliance under Stepan DEMIRCHIAN won 14 seats. Other parties included the Rule of Law Country with 12 seats, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation with 11 seats, the National Unity Party with 9 seats and the United Labor Union with 6 seats. Final results of the parliamentary elections will not be available until the end of the week.

Armenia Announces Preliiminary Results for Constitutional Referendum

Armenians also voted in a referendum on several amendments to the country's constitution. According to the preliminary results, about 1,216, 581 voters participated in the referendum, with 563,205 votes in favor of the changes and 550,668 votes against the alterations. Official results of the referendum will not be available until the end of the week.

Armenia Announces Referendum Date of May 25

On April 2, a motion to hold a referendum was called after the Armenian parliament approved several constitutional provisions proposed by President Robert KOCHARIAN. The referendum will allow voters to decide whether to approve the amendments such as allowing the president to nominate and dismiss its prime minister and cabinet. The referendum is scheduled on May 25, the same time as the country’s parliamentary elections.

Allegations of Irregularities in Armenia's Presidential Election as Results are Announced

On March 27, the Armenia Constitutional Court agreed to consider a lawsuit filed by presidential candidate Stepan DEMIRCHIAN of the Peoples Party of Armenia.  According to DEMIRCHIAN, the lawsuit alleges that the March 5th presidential election results are invalid due to irregularities ranging from illegal ballot stuffing to voter intimidation.  According to the Armenian Electoral Council, DEMIRCHIAN secured 32.52% of the national votes, while incumbent president Robert KOCHARIAN won the office with 67.48% of the national votes. The Constitutional Court has until mid April to hear the case.

Armenia Announces Preliminary Results of Presidential Election

According to the preliminary results from the Armenian Central Election Commission (CEC) approximately 61.88% or 2,295,474 voters participated in the February 19 presidential election with incumbent president Robert KOCHARIAN securing 707,155 votes or 49.8% of the valid votes while Stepan DEMIRCHIAN of the Peoples Party of Armenia came in second with 400,846 votes or 27.7% of valid votes. Under the electoral law, a candidate must secure 50% of the valid votes to win the presidency.  The CEC announced that a second round of elections will be held on March 5, between KOCHARIAN and DEMIRCHIAN despite widespread accusations of electoral irregularities by opposition parties.

Armenia Announces Early Parliamentary Election Date of May 25

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) announced that the country will hold parliamentary elections later this year. According to the election officials, candidates must register with the CEC by March 11-16 in order to participate in the parliamentary election on May 25, 2003. Registered candidates will be competing for a place in the 131-seat National Assembly, with 75 of the seats chosen from party lists.
