Government Structure:

• Chief of State: President Ukhnaagiin KHURELSUKH (since 25 June 2021)
• Head of Government: Prime Minister Luvsannamsrai OYUN-ERDENE (since 27 January 2021). There are also two Deputy Prime Ministers Sainbuyen AMARSAIKHAN (since 8 September 2022) and Chimed KHURELBAATAR (since 5 January 2023).
• Assembly: unicameral State Great Hural (Улсын Их Хурал) with 126 seats.

Electoral System:

• The President is directly elected by plurality vote for one 6-year term. Presidential candidates must be nominated by political parties that hold seats in the State Great Hural.
• The Prime Minister is chosen by the State Great Hural and is usually the leader of the majority party or coalition.
• 78 members of the State Great Hural are directly elected in a selected constituency by plurality vote. The other 48 members are directly elected by proportional representation vote. All 126 members serve 4-year terms.

Last Election:

In the 2020 State Great Hural election, the Mongolian People’s Party won 62 seats, followed by the Democratic Party (11 seats) and 3 other parties/coalitions and one independent candidate who also won seats. Voter turnout was 74%.

A slate of constitutional reforms were approved by the State Great Hural in 2023 to increase the size of the legislature from 76 seats to 126 seats and institute a mixed system with plurality and proportional representation voting.
