Election Notes:

  • The last presidential election was held over two rounds on March 21 and April 4, 2009. Ivan GAŠPAROVIĆ was re-elected in the second round of voting, winning 55.53 percent of the vote over Iveta RADIČOVÁ. GAŠPAROVIĆ is unable to contest the 2014 presidential election due to term limits. Current Prime Minister Robert FICO has been nominated as the candidates for the ruling Direction – Social Democracy Party / Smer – sociálna demokracia. In the first round of voting FICO received the most votes (28.01%), but fell short of an absolute majority. FICO will face independent candidate and entrepreneur Andrej KISKA in the second round. Opposition candidates Radoslav PROCHÁZKA and Milan KŇAŽKO have urged their supporters to vote for KISKA in the second round of the election on March 29, 2014.
