Description of government structure:

Chief of State: President Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE (since 19 December 2019)
Head of Government: Prime Minister Enadir LARABOUI (since 10 January 2024)
Assembly: Algeria has a bicameral Parliament (Majlis) consisting of the Council of the Nation (Majlis al-Oumma) with 174 seats (170 are currently filled) and the National People's Assembly (Al-Majlis Ech-Chaabi Al-Watani) with 462 seats.

Description of electoral system:

The President is elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve up to two 5-year terms. There are no presidential term limits.
The Prime Minister is appointed by the President.
In the Council of the Nation (Majlis al-Oumma), two-thirds of members are indirectly elected — in each wilaya two members are elected by an electoral college made up of local assembly members — and the remaining third of members are appointed by the President. All members serve 6-year terms, and the Constitution requires half the Council of Nations to be renewed every three years.
In the National People's Assembly (Al-Majlis Ech-Chaabi Al-Watani) 407 members are directly elected by open-list proportional representation vote to serve 5-year terms.
