The Queen is the hereditary head of state.
The Premier is appointed by the governor.
In the Senate 11 members are appointed to serve 5-year terms*. In the House of Assembly 36 members are elected by plurality vote in single-member constituencies to serve 5-year terms.

* 5 Senators are appointed on the advice of the Premier, 3 Senators are appointed on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition, and 3 are appointed at the discretion of the Governor.
