Description of government structure:

  • Assembly: Micronesia has a unicameral Congress with 14 seats.

Description of electoral system:

  • The President is elected by the congress to serve a 4-year term.
  • In the Congress, 4 members are elected by proportional representation to serve 4-year terms and 10 members are elected by plurality vote in single-member constituencies to serve 2-year terms.*

* The four proportional representation seats are elected at-large.

Main provisions in the Referendum:

  • Referendum on fourteen proposed amendments to the Constitution
    • Provide for a minimum of four justices for the FSM Supreme Court
      • 52.23% voted in favor
    • Allow FSM citizens to hold dual citizenships

    • Change jurisdiction over any matter involving ownership of land and water from Supreme Court to state courts
