Government Structure: 

  • Chief of State: President José María BALCÁZAR ZELADA (since 18 Feb 2026) 

  • Assembly: bicameral Congress of the Republic (Congreso de la República) with a 60-seat Senate (Senado) and 130-seat Chamber of Deputies (Camara de Diputados). 

 

Electoral System 

  • The President is directly elected by majority vote in up to two rounds to a 5-year term. They are not term limited beyond being prevented from immediately running for reelection. 

  • 30 of the 60 members of the Senate are elected in a single nationwide constituency. The remaining 30 are elected in single and multi-member constituencies. Members are elected to serve a 5-year term. 

  • All 130 members of the Chamber of Deputies are elected in 27 multi-member constituencies. Members are elected to serve a 5-year term.
