The President is directly elected via simple majority vote in two rounds if needed. Presidents serve a 4-year term and cannot be re-elected.

100 members of the Senate are directly elected from a single, nationwide constituency. 2 additional Senators are elected by a national constituency for indigenous communities. The final seat is allotted to the runner-up in the presidential election.

Members of the House of Representatives are directly elected via mixed system. Each department and the capital city are allocated a minimum of 2 representatives, with additional representatives allocated if the population is over 365,000 people. In 2026, 162 members were elected on this basis. Additionally, 4 representatives are elected via special constituencies, with 2 seats allocated for Afro-descendant communities, 1 seat for Indigenous communities, and 1 for an international constituency comprised of diaspora voters. An additional 16 seats are reserved in special transitional peace constituencies. The final seat is allotted to the running mate of the first-runner up in presidential elections.

Members of both chambers serve 4-year terms and are not subject to term limits.
The last presidential election was held on June 19, 2022. Gustavo PETRO won 50.44% of the vote and Rodolfo HERNANDEZ won 47.41% of the vote. Voter turnout was 58%.
