Electoral System: 

• The President and Vice President are jointly and directly elected via simple majority popular vote to serve a 5-year term. A second round may be held if needed. Terms are renewable once. Candidates who also served as the President of Zanzibar are eligible for both election and re-election.  

• 264 members of Parliament are directly elected to represent constituencies (with 214 members allocated for mainland Tanzania and 50 for Zanzibar). 113 additional seats are reserved for women in parliament, who are indirectly elected via political parties’ internal processes. 5 members are indirectly elected via the House of Representatives of Zanzibar. 1 member of Parliament is the Attorney General. 10 members are appointed by the President.  

Last Election: 

The last presidential election was held on October 28, 2020. John MAGUFULI won 84.4% of the vote and Tundu LISSU won 13% of the vote. Voter turnout was 51%.
