General Information

At Stake in this Election: 

  • All 63 members of the House of Representatives. 

 

  • Chief of State: King CHARLES III (since September 2022), represented by General Sir Patrick L. ALLEN (since 26 February 2009) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Andrew HOLNESS (since 3 March 2016) 

  • Assembly: bicameral Parliament, comprised of the 63-seat House of Representatives and the 21-seat Senate 

 

  • The Chief of State is a hereditary monarchy, who appoints the Governor General.  

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the Governor General and is usually the leader of the majority party or coalition in the House of Representatives.  

  • Members of the House of Representatives are directly elected via a plurality/majority system to serve 5-year terms.  

  • Members of the Senate are appointed to serve 5-year terms. 13 senators are appointed by the Governor General, acting in accordance with the Prime Minister. 8 senators are appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition.  

 

The last parliamentary election was held on September 3, 2020. The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won 48 seats and the People's National Party (PNP) won 15 seats. Voter turnout was 37%.
