The President is chosen by the party that wins a plurality in the National Assembly elections. Prior to the election, each party nominates a candidate to become the President. They are chosen to serve a 5-year term.

40 of the National Assembly’s 72 seats are elected via proportional representation in a single national constituency. 25 of 72 seats are chosen by Hare quota in 10 constituencies. Up to 7 remaining seats are reserved for non-elected ministers and the Speaker of the National Assembly. All members are elected to a 5-year term.
In the last election in 2020, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic won a majority with 33 of 65 seats. A coalition between A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change came in a close second with 31 seats. Voter turnout was 73%.
