General Information

At Stake in this Election:  

  • All 145 seats in the Gabonese National Assembly 

 

Government Structure:  

  • Chief of State: President Brice Clotaire OLIGUI NGUEMA (since 04 Sep 2023) 

  • Assembly: bicameral Parliament (Parlement) with 70-seat Senate (Sénat) and 145-seat National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) 

 

  • The President is elected by majority vote, in up to two rounds, to a once renewable, seven-year term. 

  • All 70 members of the Senate are indirectly elected by local officials through majority vote, in up to two rounds, in single-member constituencies to a five-year term. 

  • All 145 members of the National Assembly are elected by majority vote, in up to two rounds, in single-member constituencies to a five-year term.  

 

In the last election in 2023, a coup d'état occurred before official results could be published. 

 

New/Unique in this Election: 

This will be the first election for the National Assembly since the 2023 coup d'état, which replaced the then sitting National Assembly with a transitional legislature. Since then, Gabon has adopted a new constitution and electoral code. These made sweeping changes to Gabon’s government structure including transitioning to a presidential system, expanding executive powers, and removing the role of Prime Minister.
