General Information

At Stake in this Election:  

  • All 36 seats in the Chamber of Senators 

 

Government Structure: 

  • Chief of State: President Luis Alberto ARCE Catacora (since 8 November 2020) 

  • Head of Government: President Luis Alberto ARCE Catacora (since 8 November 2020) 

  • Assembly: bicameral Plurinational Legislative Assembly (Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional), with a 130-seat Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados) and a 36-member Chamber of Senators (Cámara de Senadores).  

 

  • The President and Vice President are directly elected on the same ballot by winning at least 50% of the vote, or 40% of the vote and 10% more than the next highest candidate. If neither of these conditions are met, a runoff is held. Presidents and Vice Presidents serve 5-year terms. In May 2025, the Constitutional Court upheld a decision to block the candidacy of former president Evo Morales, effectively barring presidents from serving more than two terms. 

  • Members of the Chamber of Deputies are directly elected via a mixed system to serve 5-year terms, renewable once. Half of the members are elected via direct voting electoral districts and the other half are elected from proportional voting electoral districts, from lists headed by candidates for President, Vice President, and Senators of the Republic. 7 seats are reserved for members of Indigenous groups.  

  • Members of the Chamber of Senators are directly elected via proportional representation to serve 5-year terms, renewable once.  

 

The last election for the Chamber of Senators was held on October 18, 2020. Movement for Socialism (MAS) won 21 seats, Civic Community won 11 seats, and Creemos won 4 seats. Voter turnout was 88%.
