At Stake in this Election:  

  • 169 seats of the Norwegian Parliament 

 

  • Chief of State: King HARALD V (since 23 June 1991) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Jonas Gahr STØRE (since 14 October 2021) 

  • Assembly: unicameral Parliament (Stortinget) with 169 seats 

 

  • The King is a hereditary monarch.  

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the monarch with the approval of parliament to serve a 4-year term. 

  • All 169 seats are elected by open list proportional representation in 19 multi-member districts for 4-year terms.  

 

In the last election in 2021, the Labour Party won a plurality with 48 seats. Voter turnout was 77%. 

 

Recent election law changes introduced an elections complaint body, enhanced considerations for voters with disabilities, changed vote-counting procedures to increase transparency, eliminated preferential voting for Parliamentary elections, and changed the required number of signatures for a list proposal. Additionally, this legislation allows for extending or postponing elections due to emergency conditions.
