Description of electoral system: 

  • The King is hereditary. 

  • The Prime Minister is elected by parliament to serve a 4-year term. 

  • In the Legislature (Staten) 21 members are elected through an open-list proportional representation system to serve 4-year terms.***

Last Election: 

  • The last parliamentary election in Aruba was held on September 22nd, 2017. The Aruban People’s Party and the People’s Electoral Movement both obtained 9 seats, resulting in no majority. Evelyn WEVER-CROES became country’s first female Prime Minister.
