Description of government structure:

  • Chief of State: President Gjorge IVANOV (since 12 May 2009)
  • Head of Government: Interim Prime Minister Emil DIMITRIEV (since 18 January 2016)
  • Assembly: Macedonia has a unicameral Sobranie (Assembly) consisting of 123 seats with members serving 4-year terms.

Description of electoral system:

  • In the Assembly, 120 members are directly elected in multi-seat constituencies by proportional representation vote and 3 are directly elected in diaspora constituencies worldwide by simple majority vote.

Last Election:

  • Elections for the Assembly were last held on 27 April 2014. In that election, the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) won 61 seats with 44.50% of the vote. The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) won 34 seats with 26.20%, the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) won 19 seats with 14.20%, and the Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA) won 7 seats with 6.1%. The Citizen Option for Macedonia and National Democratic Revival took 1 seat each.

Note: Elections were called earlier this year for April and then June but were cancelled on both occasions and moved to this later date.
