- The President is elected by qualified majority to serve a four-year term. In instances where no candidate receives at least 45 percent of the vote, or 40 percent with a lead of 10 percent over the runner-up, then a run-off is held.
- In the Senate (Senado), 72 members are elected for six-year terms using a closed-list proportional representation system. One-third of the Senate is renewable every two years. Senators are elected from among 24 districts, in which the party receiving the highest number of votes receives two seats, while the party receiving the second highest number of votes receives the third seat.
- In the Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados), 257 members are elected for four-year terms through a closed-list proportional representation. Approximately half of seats are renewable every two years. While seats are allocated in proportion with provincial population size, all parties must surpass a three percent threshold to earn a seat.
