UNISDR report on building local institutions

June 24, 2010, 2:01 p.m.

Building the capacity of local institutions is vital to disaster risk reduction.   The United Nations secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has released a report, which presents a collection of case studies demonstrating the essential roles played by local authorities in addressing disaster risks.

These good practices are intended to generate increased interest in the subject among local governments, community leaders, implementing agencies, policy makers and other stakeholders, and to inspire local governments and their partners to reduce disaster risks for the most vulnerable people in their local areas, by following and replicating these concrete examples.
