Opposition in Mauritius Defeats Ruling Party in Election

Mauritius held an election for the 62 (of 70) seats in the National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) on Wednesday 10 December 2014.[i] Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has a population of 1,331,155 with approximately 936,975 registered voters.[ii] Preliminary results have the opposition coalition-the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) and the Parti Mauricien Social Democrate (PMSD)-winning 47 seats, while the ruling Labour Party and its campaign partner the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) winning 13 seats. Turnout for the election was at 74 percent.[iii] Vote counting is still underway with final results expected in the coming days.
