Dominica held an election for the 21 seats in the House of Assembly on Monday 8 December 2014.[i] Located in the Caribbean, Dominica has a population of 73,449 with approximately 67,223 registered voters.[ii] Preliminary results have the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) winning 15 seats, while the opposition United Workers’ Party (UWP) attained 6 seats.[iii] This is the “fourth electoral win” for the DLP and Prime Minister Roosevelt SKERRIT is poised to serve another term (his fourth), having assumed office in 2004.[iv] The Organization for American States (OAS), which sent an observer mission to the country, noted that while the election was fair, there were many issues that need addressing for future votes.[v] Statistics on voter turnout and final results are due in the coming days.
