Iraq Postpones Referendum On US Troop Presence

Oct. 5, 2009, midnight

Iraqis will not vote on a security pact with the United States while they vote in national elections next January, effectively delaying the withdrawal of US troops. While the original pact was an agreement between the countries' governments, Sunni leaders requested a referendum in return for their support. Politicians in both countries fear that the exit of US troops sooner than later could lead to increased insurgent activity and decaying public order.
