Gabon Frontrunner Quits Post In Advance Of Vote

Aug. 17, 2009, midnight

Honoring a request by Interim President Rose ROGOMBE, Gabonese Presidential frontrunner Ali BONGO Ondimba resigned his leadership of the Defense Ministry in order to campaign. ROGOMBE has reshuffled her cabinet in an attempt to minimize conflicts of interest by candidates in public office. Twenty-three candidates will contest Gabon’s Presidential election on August 30, the first such vote without an elected incumbent in the race since the late President Omar BONGO Ondimba took office in 1967. Ali BONGO is Omar BONGO’s son.
