CPCS study: Myanmar election views

July 13, 2010, 12:27 p.m.

2010 will mark the first elections in Myanmar after 20 years, however, the legitimacy of the legal authority regarding these elections has been called into question by the international community. The Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies conducted interviews with 87 residents of Myanmar on their opinions of the elections, whose date is yet to be disclosed by the ruling junta. The full report can be viewed here. From CPCS:

"Given the elections are widely debated in the international community, it is critical that the voices of ‘ordinary’ citizens be heard. Given the wide range of views this report may not simplify the debate, and if anything reflects the increasing diversity of opinion inside Myanmar about future directions, possibilities for change and the development of their nation."
