Description of government structure:

  • Chief of State: King FELIPE VI (since 19 June 2014)[1]
  • Head of Government: Lehendakari Iñigo URKULLU (since 15 December 2012)[2]
  • Assembly: Basque Autonomous Community of Spain has its own unicameral Basque Parliament separate from that of Spain, which is composed of 75 seats with members serving 4-year terms.

Description of electoral system:

  • Members of the Basque Parliament are elected using closed list proportional representation vote. The three provinces of the Basque autonomous community, Araba, Gipúzkoa, and Bizkaia, each elect 25 representatives the Basque Parliament.

Last Election:

  • Elections were last held on 21 October 2012. The Basque Nationalist Party won 27 seats, Euskal Herria Bildu won 21, the Socialist Party won 16, the People’s Party won 10, and Union, Progress and Democracy took 1.
