Description of electoral system:

The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term.
In the National Assembly (Drzavni Zbor), 88 members are elected by a proportional representation system with preferential vote to serve 4-year terms and 2 members are elected by simple majority preferential vote*. In the National Council (Drzavni Svet) 40 members are elected by an electoral college to serve 5-year terms.**

* The two members elected by simple majority preferential vote represent the Hungarian and Italian communities, with each minority receiving one seat.

** This is primarily an advisory body organized on corporatist principles with limited legislative powers; it may propose laws, ask to review any National Assembly decisions, and call national referenda.
