  • Assembly: Macedonia has a unicameral Assembly (Sobranie) with 120 seats.

* Since the death of President TRAJKOVSKI, parliament speaker Ljubco JORDANOVSKI has been acting as the interim president.

Description of electoral system:

  • The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 5-year term.
  • In the Assembly (Sobranie) 120 members are elected through a party-list proportional representation system to serve 4-year terms.***

*** The country is divided into six election districts determined by law. Each district elects 20 members of parliament.

* 49 elected by the universities and from candidates put forward by five vocational panels, 11 are nominated by the prime minister

  • The last presidential election was held on November 14, 1999. In this election, Boris TRAJKOVSKI of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) won the presidency with 52.4% of the votes.
