The Global Commission on Elections, Democracy and Security has released a report titled 'Deepening Democracy: A Strategy for Improving the Integrity of Elections Worldwide.' The report draws from a series of case studies across the world, examining the role elections play in strengthening democracy. While it acknowledges the importance of elections to democracy, it also cautions that elections lacking integrity can aid violence, authoritarianism, and political repression. Thus the authors of the report put forward a set of measures international and local actors can take to promote electoral integrity. The Global Commission is a joint collaboration between IDEA (The Institute for Democracy and Election Assistance) and the Kofi Annan Foundation, organized to emphasize electoral integrity in democracy promotion. The launch of the report can be watched online here.
