The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has released its conclusions on the results of the May 2012 legislative elections in Algeria. The elections assumed increased importance after President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced that the country’s National Popular Assembly (APN) would play a leading role in governmental reform. NDI sent a team of 12 total observers to observe the election process. While the election was peaceful and ran relatively smoothly, turnout in Algeria was low, and confusion over procedures remained widespread. The report examines the after effects of the elections and provides recommendations for the Algerian government, electoral authorities, political parties, civil society organizations, and the media.
