A Window for Reform in Eastern Congo: November's Elections and Three Achievable Steps on Conflict Minerals

Nov. 8, 2011, 4:36 p.m.

Written by Sasha Lezhnev for the Enough Project, this report published in November 2011, addresses reforms necessary to prevent violence before the November 28th scheduled presidential and legislative elections in Congo. Lezhnev also argues that the "illegal exploitation of conflict minerals are the catalytic issue that, if addressed properly, can unlock the door to progress in these other critical areas and hasten the peace in Congo."

The focus of the following report is on the potential for policy change on conflict minerals and conflict prevention. The upcoming election presents a moment to highlight, for Congolese leaders, the timely need to follow up on existing legislation and reforms occurring on the ground.
