International Alert conducted a study and published the report "SMALL STEPS TOWARDS PEACE Inventory and analysis of local peace practices in North and South Kivu". The three main goals of the report are:
1. Offer support for the peace building process
2. Monitor the security situation
3. Promote peace initiatives and inter-community dialogue
The main sections of the report cover “civil society as an actor for peace in the DRC” and “peace initiatives”. The study focuses on North and South Kivu where the majority of armed conflict has been concentrated since 1996. The report maps out the local peace structures and consolidates local peace initiatives. There are 171 civil society organizations that focus on peacebuliding, governance, and human rights within North and South Kivu. The report provides a breakdown of the types of organizations and the work they are doing.
