Report on Laws Regulations Governing Civil Society Organizations in Burundi

July 11, 2011, 7:21 p.m.

The World Movement for Democracy has conducted multiple reports on the status of civil society in various countries within Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, and Asia.  The Report on Laws Regulations Governing Civil Society Organizations in Burundi was conducted by World Movement participants and legal experts.  The report covers the following information regarding civil society organizations within Burundi:  Establishment and Organization, Government Oversight, CSO Activities, and Conclusions of the data observed.

The main conclusion that should be drawn from a review of the existing legislation and the evolution of the current socio-political environment in Burundi is that the problems observed are mainly due to the absence of appropriate laws and the lax and uneven application of existing laws (mainly the 1992 law on non-profit organizations).
