A More Strategic U.S. Approach to Police Reform in Africa published by CSIS looks at the role of African police forces in maintaining security and development. The report was created by a working group of experts from the U.S. government, Congress, academia, the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations. The working group agreed that there is a need to elevate the issue of police reform when creating policies and to make decisions with a long-term view in mind. Increased efficiency and effectiveness in African police forces will improve the security situation in those countries and ultimately be in the best interest of the U.S. government. There was a consensus that a strong link between development and sustainable security exists. The working group provided six recommendations to improve police reform in Africa which are found in the report.
