Tonga Holds Election and Voters Opt to Replace Half of Parliament

Located in the Pacific Ocean, Tonga has a population 106,440 with approximately 42,395 registered voters.[ii] Preliminary results have the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands winning 52.94 percent or 9 seats, and independent candidates winning 47 percent or 8 seats in parliament.[iii] According to media sources, turnout was considered high.[iv]
