Solomon Islands Holds First Post-Assistance Election

Located in the Pacific Ocean, Solomon Islands has a population of 609,883 with 287,567 registered voters.[i] The election is the first since the 10-year Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) was “reduced to a police mission supporting local police last year.”[ii] During its tenure, RAMSI spent $2.6 billion “restoring law and order following ethnic violence.”[iii] Results are still being counted, but there were 400 candidates competing in the election.[iv] Turnout is expected to be high and final results are expected in the coming weeks.
