Located in South America, Uruguay has a population of 3,332,972 with 2,563,250 registered voters.[i] For the presidential election, preliminary results have Tabare VAZQUEZ of Broad Front (FA) winning 47.2 percent of the vote, while his opponent Luis Alberto LACALLE Pou of the National Party winning 30.5 percent, and Colorado Party (PC) candidate Pedro BORDABERRY winning 12.7 percent.[ii] Uruguay’s electoral law stipulates that a runoff election is required if no candidate reaches a majority of the votes in the first round. Therefore, Mr. VAZQUEZ and Mr. LACALLE received the most votes and will face each other in the second round on Sunday 30 November 2014. Turnout for the election was high. Over 90 percent of the ballots have been counted and final results for the legislative elections are expected in the coming days.
