Latvia Holds Parliamentary Election, Ruling Coalition Maintains Power

Located in the Baltic region of Europe, Latvia has a population of 2,165,165 with approximately 1,542,193 registered voters.[i] Preliminary results have the opposition center-left (and Russian leaning) Harmony Centre (SC), winning 23 percent or 24 seats, the most in parliament. However, the center-right ruling coalition of Unity (21.87 percent), the Union of Greens and Farmers (19.53 percent), and National Alliance (16.61 percent), won 23, 21, and 17 seats respectively.[ii] Together they have a majority in parliament, 61 seats, and will continue governing. Turnout for the election was approximately 58.85 percent.[iii] Final results will be confirmed in the coming days.
