Swiss Voters Reject Healthcare and VAT Measures in Referendum

A referendum with two ballot measuresto create a public healthcare system and to eliminate the eight percent Value Added Tax (VAT) for restaurants—was held in Switzerland on Sunday 28 September 2014. The healthcare ballot measure read: "For a public health insurance”[i] The VAT ballot measure read: "End the tax-discrimination of hospitality."[ii] Ultimately, Swiss voters rejected both ballot measures.[iii] The preliminary results of the healthcare vote was: 61.8 percent or 1,512,116 of the people voted against the healthcare measure, while 38.2 percent or 932,761 people voted in favor.[iv] Meanwhile, the preliminary final results of the VAT vote was: 71.5 percent of 1,718,619 of the people voted against the measure, while 28.5 percent or 684,638 people voted in favor.[v] Turnout was 46.7 percent of eligible voters, while 5,212,154 people were registered to vote.
