Sept. 5, 2014, 12:48 p.m.

The election for 15 seats in Sint Maarten’s Parliament was held on Friday 29 August 2014. The government’s term was due to end 9 October 2014.[i] Located in the Caribbean, Sint Maarten has a population of 37,224 with approximately 21,475 registered voters.[ii][iii] Preliminary results have the United People’s Party (UP) winning 7 seats; the National Alliance (NA) winning 4 seats, and both the Democratic Party (DP) and the United St. Maarten party (US) winning 2 seats.[iv] Even though the UP won the most seats, the NA, DP, and US have formed a coalition government.[v] The last election in 2010 saw the NA win the most seats, but the UP was able to form a coalition government.[vi] Final results will be confirmed in the coming days.
