Lithuania Holds Referendum on 29 June 2014

July 11, 2014, 2:08 p.m.

The referendum on prohibiting the sale of land to foreigners, and lowering the number of signatures needed to initiate a referendum from 300,000 to 100,000 was held on Sunday 29 June 2014. Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced that, due to low voter turnout, the referendum’s ballot measures failed.[i] The CEC stated that only 11.8 percent of registered voters participated; along with those who voted early, the total turnout was 14.97 percent.[ii] In order for the referendum to have “taken place,” more than 50 percent of eligible citizens needed to participate.[iii] Approximately 2,538,430 citizens were registered to vote for Sunday’s election.[iv] The CEC also announced that 70.78 percent (approximately 268,920) of the voters who did participate, voted in favor of the proposals.[v] Prior to the referendum, Lithuania’s Socialist governing coalition and conservative opposition parties denounced the land sale ban.[vi] The banning of the sale of land to foreigners would have violated Lithuania’s agreement with the European Union (EU).[vii]
