Dr. Abdullah ABDULLAH and Dr. Ashraf GHANI Ahmadzai—the two candidates receiving the most votes from the first round of Afghanistan’s presidential elections held on 5 April 2014—competed in a runoff election on 14 June 2014.  The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) has estimated that over 7 million of the approximately 12 million eligible voters cast their ballots.[1] The IEC is scheduled to release preliminary results on 2 July 2014, and final results on 22 July 2014, following adjudication of complaints by the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).
