Presidential elections were held in Algeria on April 17, 2014. President Abdelaziz BOUTEFLIKA, candidate for the National Liberation Front / Front de Libération Nationale won re-election with 81.53 percent (8,332,598) of the vote. Despite concerns about his health, the 77-year old BOUTEFLIKA was elected to serve his fourth term in the election. Ali BENFLIS, an independent candidate finished second in the election, winning 1,224,918 votes (12.18 percent), while the remaining four candidates each received less than 4 percent of the vote each. Turnout for the election was 49.42 percent (11,307,478 Algerians), despite a boycott from the opposition Movement of Society for Peace and the Islamic Renaissance Movement.
