Gagauzia, an autonomous region of Moldova, held three referendums on the future of the region. Gagauzia, a region in southern Moldova, has a population of 155,000 people, mostly belonging to the ethnic Gagauz community. With Moldova initialing an Association Agreement with the European Union in November, Gagauzian residents were concerned about what this meant for the future of their region. In the referendums, 98.47 percent (68,181 votes) of voters voted in favor of joining the Russian led Customs Union, while 97.22 percent (66,448 votes) voted against closer integration with the European Union. Additionally, 68,023 Gagauz voted in favor of allowing the Gagauz region to be able to declare independence should Moldova ever lose or surrender its independence. In the referendums, over 70 percent of Gagauz voters participated.
