Voters in Saint Helena elected 12 new members to the Legislative Council. Saint Helena amended its electoral law prior to the election. Previously, voters elected 6 members each in 2 multi-member districts. For this election, one island-wide constituency was created, and voters could vote for up to 12 candidates. All candidates in Saint Helena run as independents, as there is no formal party system. In the election, 1,267 Saint Helenians (54.87 percent) cast their ballots, with 1,261 of these ballots being valid (99.53 percent). A main issue in the election was the creation of a Freedom of Information Act for Saint Helena, which looks likely to pass, given public statements made by many of the 12 elected members.
