The Republic of Slovenia held its presidential election on Sunday, November 11, 2012. The republic’s incumbent President, Danilo TURK, an independent, competed against Borut PAHOR of the Social Democrats/ Socialni Demokrati (SD) and Milan ZVER of the Slovenian Democratic Party/ Slovenska Demokratska Stranka (SDS). Ex-Prime Minister Borut PAHOR came in first with 40 percent of votes, a surprising development since, TURK, initially predicted as frontrunner, won only 36 percent. ZVER came in third with 24 percent. However, no candidate was able to achieve a majority in this round (50 percent). Therefore a widely anticipated run-off date is set to occur on December 2, 2012.
