Senate elections in the Czech Republic were held last Friday, October 12. In the Senate (Senat), 81 members are elected by majority vote in single member constituencies. The republic’s electoral system typically results in a runoff if no candidate receives an absolute majority in the first round. Out of 879,222 valid votes cast in the first round, the Czech Social Democratic Party came in first with 199,957 votes, followed by the Civic Democratic Party with 151,953. The runoff is set to occur today, October 19, 2012.
